Advantages of Mechanical Seals

The mechanical seal consists of a rotating face and a fixed face as well as a spring to press the two faces together. Spring types are different, it can be a single coil spring or a wave spring, it can also be a more complex spring, but regardless of the spring, it belongs to mechanical seal. Fixed parts are usually fixed in place with O-rings or rubber sleeves, which act as seals and cushions. Moving parts are usually shafts. The sealing is realized by the interface between the fixed part and the moving part.

The correct mechanical seal will improve the productivity and service life of the equipment. It requires less maintenance, thus reducing downtime. It also minimizes machine wear.

What are the advantages of mechanical seals over packing seals?

With the development of technology from steam driven equipment to electricity, mechanical seals first appeared nearly 100 years ago. Prior to the development of mechanical seals, seal packing was used as a seal in moving parts. The stuffing box is actually used to wrap the area around the shaft with rope like braided material rope. It is packed between the shaft and the axle box. But with the development of technology, the shortcomings of gland packing become obvious. However, packing seals are still used in some applications today. Friction of moving parts will generate heat, which will have a negative impact on the packing. The packing must be lubricated by medium, which means that the pump using the packing will drip; if there are too many drops, the medium will be wasted; if there are too many packing, the medium will be wasted. Failure to drip the packing sufficiently may damage the shaft.

What are the main advantages of mechanical seal over packing seal? In summary, in most applications, mechanical seals will require less maintenance, less energy, and eliminate waste and cleaning costs. In manufacturing and agriculture, that means increased profits. Mechanical seals provide reliability for shower, central heating, swimming pool and Spa applications.
